European Year of Skills… Does it sound familiar? If you are familiar with European Union initiatives and perhaps even involved in them, this concept is likely well-known to you. For those who may not be aware, let’s shed some light on it and provide a refresher for those who are already acquainted.

Skills and Talents Gain Meaning!

The year 2023 was declared the “European Year of Skills” by the European Union, marking a productive and proactive year where talents shone and new skills were discovered. So, what was accomplished under the European Year of Skills? Various training programs, workshops, and events were organized across Europe to develop new skills needed in areas such as digital skills and eco-friendly technologies. These events significantly benefited participants’ personal growth and undoubtedly contributed to their professional and vocational development.

Having a workforce equipped with the skills demanded by the European Union contributes to sustainable growth, fosters more innovation, and enhances the competitiveness of companies. The European Year of Skills 2023 is a beneficial initiative to help companies, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, address the skills shortage in the EU. This initiative promotes a mindset of reskilling and upskilling by helping people acquire the right skills for quality jobs. Additionally, the 2023 events provided qualified workers with better job opportunities and full inclusion in society. This is key to ensuring that economic recovery, as well as green and digital transitions, are socially just. Through this initiative, the European Union aimed to enhance people’s competencies in the digital world and raise awareness about environmentally friendly technologies.

Alongside events such as eco-friendly technology workshops and online seminars, hackathons pushed participants’ boundaries and allowed them to showcase their potential, contributing to both their professional and personal development. In summary, all the events and workshops organized under the European Year of Skills provided a significant opportunity for people to acquire new skills, making them more successful in their careers and daily lives.

“Skills open the door to future prosperity. This is true for individuals, as more and relevant skills are the key to better job opportunities. It is also true for companies, as a skilled workforce is key to more productivity and efficiency. However, skill shortages still persist in large parts of Europe. This is why Cohesion Policy’s investments in people’s skills and competences are crucial for ensuring the long-term competitiveness and prosperity of Europe.
